Mary Levy Greenberg, Ph.D.

I received both a master’s degree and a doctorate degree from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS. My focus of interest has been social relationships of humans and nonhuman animals. I founded the Holocaust Remembrance Forum in 1980 and then served as the Kansas Liaison to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council. Currently, I am developing and presenting an alternative explanation for anti-Semitism based on my research on societal behavior.  My commentaries, published in the Kansas City Jewish Chronicle, are available online.

MARK DEAN

My parents moved during my senior year and I ended up graduating from Niles West but my heart and soul never left Von. I went to Roosevelt University where I was elected Student Senate President during the tumultuous years of 1968/1969. I was very active politically in the anti-war effort and I appeared on the Huntley-Brinkley Report as one of the top student gov't leaders of the day. I met my wife, Leslie Nudelman, while campaigning for the Student Senate, we were married in 1969 and have remained happily married for 45 years this July.

We have to two beautiful daughters, the older daughter, husband and two children living in Buffalo Grove and the younger daughter, husband and son living in Weisbaden, Germany. We absolutely adore our three grandchildren!

After we graduated from Roosevelt U we both became teachers in Chicago. My wife remained a teacher/guidance counselor  for 30 years and I moved out of teaching into plastics manufacturing, operations management. In 1994 I accepted a job in Phoenix, AZ in plastics sales and and became a Global Account Mgr/Business Development Mgr for one of the worlds largest plastic manufacturers. I handled one account (Nokia Mobile Phones) and traveled the world for 15 years (4 million miles!) and happily retired in 2009. We now split our time between our home in Scottsdale and an apartment in Buffalo Grove close to our grandchildren.

MA from the U. of Illinois in hand, I moved to Kansas City to work for Hallmark Cards. I created copy for newsletters, direct mail, brochures, national ads and products such as children’s books, ornaments, collectibles and cards. I won Silver and Bronze Omni Awards, First Prize in newsletter creation and the Matrix Honor Award before retiring as Editorial Director.

I began writing literary poetry in college and, within a year, was published in two university journals. I’ve been writing poetry ever since.

I am poetry editor of Veterans’ Voices magazine, featuring writing by disabled vets, was Midwest Region VP for Women in Communications and served on several boards of directors. This experience helped me revive a local KC gem—The Writers Place.

My poems appear in numerous journals and anthologies winning me three Pushcart Prize nominations and the honor of being Editor’s Choice in two journals. In  2010, my chapbook, Cutting It, was released, and a 60-poem collection titled Listening to Night Whistles will be released this year.

Wed to Lynn Alan Norton at the age of 50, I am possibly the class’s oldest first-time bride.

JANET KAPLAN ROTHKOPF

After graduating from Von, I attended the University of Ill and taught second grade while my husband was in law school there. I have two children, Daniel is a computer engineer and lives in Phoenix with his family. Karen has her Ph.d in molecular genetics and lives near me. In 200l I married my husband,John.

Phew! Now that I got all that boring stuff out of the way I can talk about my current life which is much more interesting.  I retired about ten years ago. Retirement at first was an adjustment after a very busy life.  What was I going do to do with the rest of my life?  It seemed so daunting.  After all who had time to pursue or discover what really interests them while raising a family and working full time? Well I found out what I love to do and life is good, very good.  I love to write, read and draw.  I make, sell and teach jewelry classes.  I am president of the nature club in our retirement community in Florida and am at docent at the Field Museum when we are in Chicago.

My husband and I winter in Florida where we do not miss that lovely stuff called "snow." We have traveIed  extensively throughout Europe, Asia and the Middle East and the US.

When we are at home in Morton Grove,I spend many joyful hours with my granddaugter, Kaitlyn, who never ceases to amuse me.  At this point in my life I truly appreciate good health....something I always took for granted when I was young, and every day I am grateful to wake up each morning and do lots of stuff, or nothing at all.  Yup, life is good!

I went to Wisconsin for college with a bunch of people from Von.  After graduating I went to Northwestern for law school, again, with a bunch Von people.  I then went to the U.S. Department of Justice, Antitrust Division, in D.C., where I prosecuted antitrust violations for 12 years.  Got married to a woman I met in D.C. I continued as a prosecutor with the Antitrust Division until October 2012, when I retired.  I now do Pilates, work out, attend classes at Northwestern, serve on the board of a number of not for profits, and watch as many Turner Classic movies as time allows.

Of course, much has happened in the past fifty years! I have been married twice, have three sons, and two grand daughters. I achieved one Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts, History; and two Master's degrees in History and Special Education. For the past five years, I have been retired, and am finally doing just what I want to do most of the time. My earlier years were spent parenting and teaching, something that I thought that I would never do. Since my retirement, i have spent much time studying Spanish, and have made four trips to Latin America. I have also made trips to Europe and to Alaska with my husband. I also study Art History at the Art Institute of Chicago, and attend a Bible study. I work out regularly, as has been my habit for many, many years. Finally, I spend much time reading historical fiction and biography, and consorting with my friends. And of course, there is my best friend, my husband Dave Lefly.
